Do you wish to continue to another destination, or would you prefer to be returned to the location at which you boarded?" The voice was kind and polite and only slightly metallic. It was the furthest thing from my mind, that when we introduced to his other job, I couldn't believe it because it was the the last thing I expected. win some battles miss!Īll I learnt about Knight is that he is a controlling man with a crazy family and astounding side job! It's like Anya didn't have an ounce of back bone in her. I got anxious at times but it seems for no good reason, because the outcome was less than stellar. I was also shocked at the semi false advertising, as I expected a dual POV or Knight's POV based on the summary, but instead I got none of that. I realize she has a thing for writing about extremely dominant manly men, and that's why I gravitated towards this novel. I'm not gonna lie when I say that I am terribly disappointed in this story because it was written by Kirsten Ashley and I loved, totally loved The Gamble!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Relying heavily on period historical sources (notably, Henry Mayhew’s classic sociological study London Labour and the London Poor), Clark creates a graphically detailed vision of this hell just beneath earth. ![]() Clark sets her darkly confrontational story in mid-1850s London, where William May, a severely traumatized Crimean War veteran, begins work as a surveyor for master engineer Joseph Bazalgette, who has been charged with renovating and sanitizing the city’s notoriously malodorous and pestiferous sewers. It’s a faux-Victorian melodrama, akin to such recent successes as Michel Faber’s The Crimson Petal and the White and Sarah Waters’s Fingersmith. Excrement happens in this impressively researched first novel, which earned its London author an Orange Fiction Prize nomination. ![]() ![]() They were not struggling but were frugal with what they had.
